Washington, D.C. – Idaho Congressmen Walt Minnick and Mike Simpson are urging Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack to purchase more dairy products for federal nutrition programs.
“Idaho’s dairy industry is an essential part of the state’s economy, employing more than 26,000 people,” states a July 24 letter from Minnick and Simpson. “Currently, declining prices, high input costs, and decreased demand have significantly impacted the stability of the industry.”
The letter to Vilsack urges the pursuit of long-term solutions to volatile price swings for dairy products, and also calls for “quick action” to get surplus product off the market using U.S. Department of Agriculture purchasing power. The Congressmen also thanked Vilsack for resurrecting and implementing a variety of programs to help the dairy industry, which is critical to Idaho.
Both Simpson and Minnick are also charter members of the newly revived Congressional Dairy Caucus, which will be officially introduced later this week.
